One of the most endearing aspects of Michael’s time at the center has been his ability to adapt as he ages, moving from cottage to cottage as needed. His resilience is a testament to the thoughtful accommodations provided by the staff.
Michael’s cheerful and sociable nature is evident in his interactions with caregivers and housemates. He derives great joy from playing bingo with them, exchanging back scratches, and wholeheartedly participating in the center’s birthday and holiday parties. His enthusiasm, especially during events like “Spooktacular” at Halloween, is beautifully captured in photos where he is seen beaming with delight.
Michael’s active engagement in various activities has brought him immense pleasure. Whether it’s dancing in his wheelchair at parties, participating in wheelchair races and ball tosses in the Special Olympics, or taking a refreshing swim at the pool, he embraces each opportunity with enthusiasm. His presence at church, where he claps his hands and sings wholeheartedly in the Living-Center choir, reflects his strong sense of community.
Notably, Michael takes great pride in completing tasks assigned to him in the workshop and earning money that allows him to make purchases on off-campus shopping trips. He also willingly assists staff with chores, such as folding towels, to the best of his ability. His independent spirit and willingness to contribute to his home are truly commendable.
It’s worth mentioning that Michael’s lively personality extends beyond his activities and responsibilities. His mother once humorously remarked that “he thinks he runs his home,” a sentiment echoed by the staff who appreciate his spirited attempts to do so.
